Maybe you are a parent who needs to make sure the kids are not misusing the Internet. Maybe you have a gambling habit online and need to curb it completely. Maybe you want to stop the chance of someone using your connection to view unsavoury sites. Or, maybe you are fed up stumbling onto a pornographic website when you were looking up innocent subjects like gardening or something crazy.
There is a solution that in my opinion is much more controllable than the typical Net-Nanny or CYberPatrol type software that’s available.

That is OPENDNS. I have used it for nearly a year. It increases you Internet speed and controls whats available. And its free. Let me explain.
First of all, what is DNS? DNS is a look-up service. Without getting too technical, its the exact same as when you dial a persons name in your mobile phone. Your phone looks up the number and dials it. Well OpenDNS does this but allows you to stop certain numbers being called. OK, got it? Lets move on…
OpenDNS stays between your computer and the website you want to see. So it acts like a cop and says yes or no. Here is an example of it in action:
I will search gambling. I have all gambling sites blocked by default. Here goes…

Now without OpenDNS, when i click on WIlliamHill I get this:

But with OpenDNS in action – this is what happens:

and thats it..
Complete control.
I know what your thinking… wow, but i dont know how i would set up something like this. Well it is so so simple…
You login into your router and point the DNS settings away from you broadband provider. SIMPLE!

Ok in english… you type in 10 digit number in to the settings box. Like mine here:

To get to your router, you type in the router address. Usually 192.168.1.0 or 192.168.1.1. If your eircom then its 192.168.1.254. Type that into your internet address bar. Goto DNS settings and then change them as above.
If thats been too hard to follow, dont worry… OpenDNS have nearly every router already covered in
their step by step.

Really good post, but it won’t seem to work with my router ip address, any ideas?
