Having worked in the mobile phone industry for so many years, I grew accustomed to upgrading my handset regularly and having the latest tech. This was always an expensive hobby, even though I was working in that industry. Its more expensive for the everyday gadget lovers. Phones have advanced so much with camera quality being the driving force for so long. I have on two occasions, used only my Nokia N95 and N86 8MP phones for my holidays snaps.
But you will have noticed over the past year that its all moving toward social networking and GPS. Each phone now promises navigation and Facebook and Twitter access. Typically, the person who wants the cutting edge phone, wants these features and they most likely have bought GPS navigation units also. This equals lots of these little guys €€€€€€€€€€€ and few more of his best friends – the zeros. I always think its funny how the Euro symbol – € – is like a smiley face.
For example, on my N86 I have Nokia Maps. A years subscription to the is €60. On my Windows Phone, the HTC Touch Pro, I have Garmin. This is €200 for a year depending on maps. I know your thinking, does it cost that much.. Well a map out of date is useless, and you may more ever year to keep it up to date.
Well, in their usual style, Google saw fit to end all of this. They developed the Android phone. It is about ot be unleashed properly in Ireland and it is going to cause a storm. Yes we have fancy phones here, including what I mentioned above and the iPhone, along with Blackberries and even the Palm Pre. But again, its the same scenario. You buy the handset for a lot of money, pay a lot for data plans and then pay for all the add on software to use the phone in the first place. That little android logo is one you are going to get used to. Meteor Ireland, will be launching the HTC Hero this month. I am really looking forward to this. O2 Ireland, will be getting behind this but have not really committed to anything. Well at least not to me they haven’t.
Googles Android phones will be offering A LOT for free. Later this evening, I will be writing a post on the recently announced Google Maps Navigation. This alone will make the Android launch worth waiting for.
