It may not seem like much, at first glance, but the ability to scroll a window without having to click on it and shift the focus of your current window is a huge time saver. Once WizMouse is installed simply mousing over any open window and engage your scroll wheel for instant scroll with no additional click or shift in focus necessary. You’ll get so used to it you’ll forget that it wasn’t built into Windows from the start.

Like any other file on your computer, Microsoft Word documents can get corrupted. Sometimes the damage manifests in obvious ways, like with formatting issues. A corrupt Word document can cause application crashes, system hangs, and many other annoyances that hamper your productivity.

Every new Microsoft Word release introduces new types of file corruption, and can also cause new and different types of problems. There are a few techniques that you can use to repair damaged Word documents, or damaged areas in Word documents, that are quick and easy. None of these fixes work 100% of the time, but these techniques have been proven time and time again.

Document Crashes Repeatedly

This is one of the worst types of document corruption, but it is also one of the most common. You open a document and you’re working in it for a while, and then Word suddenly comes to a halt and shuts down. You re-open the document, and a few minutes later the same thing happens.

Once you’ve determined that the problem is limited to one document and not a larger system or Microsoft Word problem, you can easily fix IT. Open a new blank document, and then open the damaged document. Copy the entire contents of the damaged document and paste it into the new blank document.

Save the new document with a new name in another place (as a precaution incase the problem involves where you were saving the original file). Make sure that the new file has all of the formatting and elements (pictures, tables, etc.) that appeared in the original.

Once you have confirmed that the new copy of the document contains the full contents and formatting of the original document, you can continue working from the new document. This will fix a lot of corrupt documents, but if the problem is linked to a corrupt element in the document (picture, embedded Microsoft Office file, etc.), it is possible that the crashes and application halts will continue.

If that is the case, try removing some of the larger elements from the document and see if it fixes the issue.

Formatting Will Not Change

If you have a document that is heavily formatted, you may encounter issues removing or replacing existing formatting. This frequently happens in Office 2003 and Office 2007 Word documents that have a lot of styles.

We’ve personally experienced this particular issue extensively when editing documents. If you remove a few lines from a document that are formatted in a particular way (e.g., a bulleted list), sometimes the next line will either take the formatting of the lines you removed, or will refuse to take the formatting of the line you removed.

Another good example of this is when you use a Header 1 style to start a chapter after a page break, but after you move items around in the document, the chapter number in the Header 1 style disappears. We’ve all encountered issues like this, and most of us use a trial and error strategy to fix it. Here are some things you should try first.

1. Remove the formatting using Clear All from the Styles sidebar menu.

2. Remove the text that is giving problems (CTRL+X) and paste it back into the document as plain text. Try reformatting it after you do this.

3 . Insert a blank page in the document close to the area that has formatting issues, and move all of the text and document elements to the new blank page. Delete the page that was having formatting issues.

These techniques will not fix every instance of formatting problems, but they will help. If you see this happening throughout your document, consider copying the contents of the document to a new blank document.

One of the most important decisions you will have to make when buying a netbook is whether to buy Windows XP or Windows 7 Starter for your operating system.

Windows XP had a long and fruitful life as the operating system of choice for almost a decade. Although it would seem that with the release of Windows Vista and 7, XP would fade from memory, it remains an excellent choice for netbooks and other applications where a fast, small-footprint O/S is needed.

Alternatively, you could opt for Microsoft’s Windows 7 Starter, essentially a stripped down version of Windows 7 Home Premium specially designed for netbooks and mini laptops. If you are confused about which operating system to choose, read on to learn the pros and cons of using Windows XP or Windows 7 Starter as your netbook’s O/S.

Windows XP Pros

Full Operating System – If you want a full O/S that doesn’t seem to be a watered down solution, XP is the better choice. Without any programs running, XP takes up only about 250MB of RAM vs about 1200MB with Windows 7 Home Premium. If hardware is a concern, XP just may make netbooks a possibility,

Stability – There’s no denying that Windows XP is a stable computing platform. Well, it should be after a decade of service packs, patches, and upgrades. If you are comfortable with XP as a desktop or laptop O/S, it will likely serve you well on a netbook.

Support – Going back to the 10 years of XP thing, no other operating has more support available on the web. If you have a problem, a quick Google search returns thousands of pages ready to help you with free tech support. No such luck for Windows 7 Starter given that it is new and not many people run it as an O/S.

Windows XP Cons

Old – As stated above, Windows XP is about 10 years old even though it enjoyed a long life. Still, if you use your netbook for 3 years, your O/S of choice will be 13 years old when you finally junk it. That fact doesn’t sit well with some netbook buyers.

Limited Future Support – No matter how long its life, even XP’s support will be limited in the future. Although you are covered for old issues, good luck finding support for new ones, especially those that include new hardware.

No 64-bit Option – Although there was a 64-bit edition of Windows XP (x64 edition), no current manufacturer offers it as an O/S for netbooks. Although Windows 7 Starter is also only available as a 32-bit O/S, at least with XP there was a possibility. As the software industry moves on to produce 64-bit versions of its software, you may be left behind no matter which of the two operating systems you choose.

Windows 7 Starter Pros

Latest Operating System – Although a stripped down version, at least Windows 7 Starter is based on the most current O/S from Microsoft. At the very least, you can expect the same kind of support you would expect from a current desktop or laptop O/S.

Streamlined – Although technically stripped down, some people prefer to consider Windows 7 Starter as streamlined for netbooks. Rather than install Home Premium and cut out everything unnecessary in order to deliver a pleasant computing experience, Microsoft has already done the work for you – it’s called Windows 7 Starter.

Anytime Upgrade Available – If you do decide to take the plunge and run Windows 7 Home Premium on your netbook, you can use Windows Anytime Upgrade to make the switch for about $80. At least this way you have the option if you think the investment is worth it.

Windows 7 Starter Cons

Limited Functionality – Let’s be honest, Windows 7 Starter really is a stripped down version of its bigger brothers Home Premium, Professional, and Ultimate Edition. Although one thing the software giant got right was to allow you to run as many programs at one time as you want (well, at least as many as your RAM and processor can handle). Previous versions of Starter allowed a maximum of three programs to run simultaneously.

No Aero – If you got used to the Aero Desktop in Vista and 7, you may be in for a shock when you realize that the pretty desktop you have in those operating systems isn’t available in Windows 7 Starter. Don’t look for Aero Glass or Peek in this stripped down O/S because you won’t find them.

Preinstalled Only – Windows 7 Starter is only available preinstalled on a netbook or similar device. If you choose Windows XP, you may not be able to switch to Windows 7 Starter even if you are willing to pay for it. Make your decisions now because you may not be able to change it later.

Conclusion

Although a stripped down version of the other editions of Microsoft’s latest operating system, Windows 7 Starter is a competent alternative when choosing an O/S for a netbook. Still, Windows XP just may have some more life left in her if you want a full-fledged operating system and want to enjoy the free support available on the web.

If you generally like the features of Windows 7 and don’t mind that it doesn’t quite look or feel like its big brothers, Windows 7 Starter may be a good choice for you. If you want the tried and true stability and usability of an O/S with a long, successful history, Windows XP may be the better choice.

Whatever you choose, think of how you intend to use your netbook and make the decision from that information rather than the list of features each choice offers.

Corruption of Windows operating system is a very common issue, which often puts you in the desert of empty disk that is data loss. One of the main reasons for the corruption of Windows operating system is the damage of file system. Once the file system is damaged, Windows cannot boot and you need to repair the operating system. If you do not repair the operating system then you face data loss. Most of the guys do not repair the corrupt operating system rather bear data loss. Reason behind that is lack of the knowledge about the process of repairing the damaged operating system. Today, you acknowledge the process of repairing the corrupt operating system using Windows built in Recovery Console. However, for that you first need to install the Recovery console.

Install Recovery Console
Execute following steps to install Windows XP recovery console:

Insert the CD of Windows XP in the CD-ROM of your computer.

Click Start > Run.

Type d:\i386\winnt32.exe/cmdcons. Here, d is the letter of the CD – ROM drive.

Click the Yes button to start the installation process.

Restart your computer.

When you restart your computer system, Microsoft Windows Recovery console appears on Windows start up.
Use Recovery Console
Follow the below mentioned steps for using Windows Recovery console:

Switch on your computer system.

Press the ‘R’ key when you see the “Welcome to Setup” screen. The Windows Recovery Console starts.

In case, you have multi-boot computer then select the operating system for which you want to use the Recovery console.

Type the administrator’s password. If no password was assigned to the admin account then simple press the ENTER key.

Use required commands for repairing Windows XP and getting lost data. If you do not know that which command should be executed then type help at the command prompt and you will see a list of the commands that can be used for recovering data.

After using the Recovery console, type exit on the command prompt to close the Recovery console and restart your computer system.

This way, you can repair the damaged operating system and recover the data stored on computer’s hard disk. However, using the Recovery Console require advance knowledge about its commands. If you do not have good knowledge about the Windows Recovery console then do not use it. Rather use Kernel for NTFS – Recover NTFS Data software, which is self-explaining and simple-to-use software designed for repairing the damaged Windows operating systems. The Recover NTFS Data software can be used to recover data lost from any of the Windows operating system, such as Windows 95, 98, 2000, 2003, XP, Vista, and Windows 7.

A new feature in Windows Media Player 12, which is included with Windows 7, is being able to stream media over the web to other Windows 7 computers. Today we will take a look at how to set it up and what you need to begin.

Note: You will need to perform this process on each computer that you want to use.

What You’ll Need

Two computers running Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional, or Ultimate. The host, or home computer that you will be streaming the media from, cannot be on a public network or part of domain.

Windows Live ID

UPnP or Port Forwarding enabled on your home router

Media files added to your Windows Media Player library

Windows Live ID

Sign up online for a Windows Live ID if you do not already have one. See the link below for a link to Windows Live.

Configuring the Windows 7 Computers

Open Windows Media Player and go to the library section. Click on Stream and then “Allow Internet access to home media.”

The Internet Home Media Access pop up window will prompt you to link your Windows Live ID to a user account. Click “Link an online ID.”

If you haven’t already installed the Windows Live ID Sign-In Assistant, you will be taken to Microsoft’s website and prompted to download it.

Once you have completed the Windows Live download assistant install, you will see Windows Live ID online provider appear in the “Link Online IDs” window. Click on “Link Online ID.”

Next, you’ll be prompted for a Windows Live ID and password. Enter your Windows Live ID and password and click “Sign In.”

A pop up window will notify you that you have successfully allowed Internet access to home media.

Now, you will have to repeat the exact same configuration on the 2nd Windows 7 computer. Once you have completed the same configuration on your 2nd computer, you might also need to configure your home router for port forwarding.

If your router supports UPnP, you may not need to manually forward any ports on your router. So, this would be a good time to test your connection. Go to a nearby hotspot, or perhaps a neighbor’s house, and test to see if you can stream your media. If not, you’ll need to manually forward the ports. You can always choose to forward the ports anyway, just in case.

Note: We tested on a Linksys WRT54GL router, which supports UPnP, and found we still needed to manually forward the ports.

Finding the ports to forward on the router

Open Windows Media Player and make sure you are in Library view. Click on “Stream” on the top menu, and select “Allow Internet access to home media.”

On the “Internet Home Media Access” window, click on “Diagnose connections.”

The “Internet Streaming Diagnostic Tool” will pop up. Click on “Port forwarding information” near the bottom.

On the “Port Forwarding Information” window you will find both the Internal and External Port numbers you will need to forward on your router. The Internal port number should always be 10245. The external number will be different depending on your computer. Microsoft also recommends forwarding port 443.

Configuring the Router

Next, you’ll need to configure Port Forwarding on your home router. We will show you the steps for a Linksys WRT54GL router, however, the steps for port forwarding will vary from router to router.

On the Linksys configuration page, click on the Administration Tab along the top, click the “Applications & Gaming Tab, and then the “Port Range Forward” tab below it.

Under “Application,” type in a name. It can be any name you choose. In both the “Start” and “End” boxes, type the port number. Enter the IP address of your home computer in the IP address column. Click the check box under “Enable.” Do this for both the internal and external port numbers and port 443. When finished, click the “Save Settings” button.

Note: It’s highly recommended that you configure your home computer with a static IP address

When you’re ready to play your media over the Internet, open up Windows Media Player and look for your host computer and username listed under “Other Libraries.” Click on it expand the list to see your media libraries. Choose a library and a file to play.

Now you can enjoy your streaming media over the Internet.

Conclusion

We found media streaming over the Internet to work fairly well. However, we did see a loss of quality with streaming video. Also, Recorded TV .wtv and dvr-ms files did not play at all.

There are many anti-malware programs out there that will clean your system of nasties, but what happens if you’re not able to use such a program? Autoruns, from SysInternals (recently acquired by Microsoft), is indispensable when removing malware manually.

There are a few reasons why you may need to remove viruses and spyware manually:

Perhaps you can’t abide running resource-hungry and invasive anti-malware programs on your PC

You might need to clean your mom’s computer (or someone else who doesn’t understand that a big flashing sign on a website that says “Your computer is infected with a virus – click HERE to remove it” is not a message that can necessarily be trusted)

The malware is so aggressive that it resists all attempts to automatically remove it, or won’t even allow you to install anti-malware software

Part of your geek credo is the belief that anti-spyware utilities are for wimps

Autoruns is an invaluable addition to any geek’s software toolkit. It allows you to track and control all programs (and program components) that start automatically with Windows (or with Internet Explorer). Virtually all malware is designed to start automatically, so there’s a very strong chance that it can be detected and removed with the help of Autoruns.

We have covered how to use Autoruns in an earlier article, which you should read if you need to first familiarize yourself with the program.

Autoruns is a standalone utility that does not need to be installed on your computer. It can be simply downloaded, unzipped and run (link below). This makes is ideally suited for adding to your portable utility collection on your flash drive.

When you start Autoruns for the first time on a computer, you are presented with the license agreement:

After agreeing to the terms, the main Autoruns window opens, showing you the complete list of all software that will run when your computer starts, when you log in, or when you open Internet Explorer:

To temporarily disable a program from launching, uncheck the box next to it’s entry. Note: This does not terminate the program if it is running at the time – it merely prevents it from starting next time. To permanently prevent a program from launching, delete the entry altogether (use the Delete key, or right-click and choose Delete from the context-menu)). Note: This does not remove the program from your computer – to remove it completely you need to uninstall the program (or otherwise delete it from your hard disk).

Suspicious Software

It can take a fair bit of experience (read “trial and error”) to become adept at identifying what is malware and what is not. Most of the entries presented in Autoruns are legitimate programs, even if their names are unfamiliar to you. Here are some tips to help you differentiate the malware from the legitimate software:

If an entry is digitally signed by a software publisher (i.e. there’s an entry in the Publisher column) or has a “Description”, then there’s a good chance that it’s legitimate

If you recognize the software’s name, then it’s usually okay. Note that occasionally malware will “impersonate” legitimate software, but adopting a name that’s identical or similar to software you’re familiar with (e.g. “AcrobatLauncher” or “PhotoshopBrowser”). Also, be aware that many malware programs adopt generic or innocuous-sounding names, such as “Diskfix” or “SearchHelper” (both mentioned below).

Malware entries usually appear on the Logon tab of Autoruns (but not always!)

If you open up the folder that contains the EXE or DLL file (more on this below), an examine the “last modified” date, the dates are often from the last few days (assuming that your infection is fairly recent)

Malware is often located in the C:\Windows folder or the C:\Windows\System32 folder

Malware often only has a generic icon (to the left of the name of the entry)

If in doubt, right-click the entry and select Search Online…

The list below shows two suspicious looking entries: Diskfix and SearchHelper

These entries, highlighted above, are fairly typical of malware infections:

They have neither descriptions nor publishers

They have generic names

The files are located in C:\Windows\System32

They have generic icons

The filenames are random strings of characters

If you look in the C:\Windows\System32 folder and locate the files, you’ll see that they are some of the most recently modified files in the folder (see below)

Double-clicking on the items will take you to their corresponding registry keys:

Removing the Malware

Once you’ve identified the entries you believe to be suspicious, you now need to decide what you want to do with them. Your choices include:

Temporarily disable the Autorun entry

Permanently delete the Autorun entry

Locate the running process (using Task Manager or similar) and terminating it

Delete the EXE or DLL file from your disk (or at least move it to a folder where it won’t be automatically started)

or all of the above, depending upon how certain you are that the program is malware.

To see if your changes succeeded, you will need to reboot your machine, and check any or all of the following:

Autoruns – to see if the entry has returned

Task Manager (or similar) – to see if the program was started again after the reboot

Check the behavior that led you to believe that your PC was infected in the first place. If it’s no longer happening, chances are that your PC is now clean

Conclusion

This solution isn’t for everyone and is most likely geared to advanced users. Usually using a quality Antivirus application does the trick, but if not Autoruns is a valuable tool in your Anti-Malware kit.

Keep in mind that some malware is harder to remove than others. Sometimes you need several iterations of the steps above, with each iteration requiring you to look more carefully at each Autorun entry. Sometimes the instant that you remove the Autorun entry, the malware that is running replaces the entry. When this happens, we need to become more aggressive in our assassination of the malware, including terminating programs (even legitimate programs like Explorer.exe) that are infected with malware DLLs.

Shortly we will be publishing an article on how to identify, locate and terminate processes that represent legitimate programs but are running infected DLLs, in order that those DLLs can be deleted from the system.

Microsoft has won court approval to shut down a global network of computers which it says is responsible for more than 1.5bn spam messages every day.

A US judge granted the firm’s request to shut down 277 internet domains, which it said were used to “command and control” the so-called Waledac botnet.

A botnet is a network of infected computers under the control of hackers.

The firm said that closing the domains would mean that up to 90,000 PCs would stop receiving orders to send out spam.

A recent analysis by the firm found that between 3-21 December “approximately 651 million spam e-mails attributable to Waledac were directed to Hotmail accounts alone”.

Microsoft said that although it had effectively shut down the network, thousands of computers would still be infected with malware and advised people to run anti-virus software.

The court order was part of what was called “Operation b49″.

Along with intelligence organisation Shadowserver, the University of Washington and security firm Symantec, Microsoft managed to get a court in Alexandria, Virginia, to force Verisign, which manages the .com domain, to temporarily switch off the domains.

Microsoft said it was the result of months of investigation and described it as a legal first.

“This action has quickly and effectively cut off traffic to Waledac at the .com or domain registry level, severing the connection between the command and control centres of the botnet and most of its thousands of zombie computers around the world.”

I have been beta testing an add in for my Windows Home Server for what feels like ever!!! It’s an essential tool in managing your disks in Windows Home Server. It has seamless integration with WHS. When it is installed, you wonder how could Microsoft possible have left these features out of a server… Oh well, we ask that question enough anyway…

Here are the details and press release:

Tentacle Software is proud to announce the release of Disk Management 1.1, the next version of our very popular Windows Home Server Add-In. It has, as they say, been a long time coming.

We’ve kept this release under the radar, for the most part. We’ve talked about it in hushed whispers (through various threads on We Got Served, and teaser posts here) for at least a year and a half. Why did it take so long? We really, really wanted to get it right.

New Features

We re-architected the entire Add-In to use a Windows Service to do all the back-end heavy lifting. That’s given us the flexibility to add a bunch of functionality that you’ve all been asking for.

Everyone loves bullet points, so here are our new shinies in no particular order:

Significantly improved user interface (including a collapsible pane for the wireframe if you don’t use it)

Significantly improved performance, especially on multi-core CPUs

Disk Management will no longer be free.

There are a number of reasons for us to do this, but mostly we believe that Disk Management is worth paying for, and moving to a paid model will help ensure that Disk Management is supported and maintained in the future.

Disk Management is available as a free 30-day trial, with no feature or functionality limitations. You can try it out with no risk and see how awesome the new version is. If you love it as much as we do, a license for v1.x will cost you US$10 per server.

New Website

The Tentacle Software website has had a major facelift. We’ve got a whole new style, and a new store. Have a look and tell us what you think; we would love to hear your feedback.

The Future

We’re very excited about this release, as I’m sure you can tell. We believe that Disk Management 1.1 is the start of something special for us, and we’ve got plans for all sorts of goodies for Windows Home Server that I’m sure you’ll love.

We want to sincerely thank all our beta testers, and everyone who has given us feedback. Disk Management and Tentacle Software are two years old and we couldn’t have made it this far without you.

OK, OK, I know there are many free anti-virus software available out there. We have Microsoft Security Essentials and AVG as 2 fine examples of great free anti virus software

Some of you may want to pay for anti virus software because you believe that you will be better protected, and that’s fine. That’s a personal decision. However, it’s not necessarily the case at all, I used AVG free and AVG pro, never got a virus with either. I used Kaspersky which is not free , however Microsoft Security Essentials did the job just as well and is free.

Well, I’d like to now bring your attention to Avast Free 5.0!

Yes as it’s name suggests it’s free and yes there is a pro version you can pay for if you wish.

The Key Components that compile this latest version according to Avast are:

Improved anti virus and anti spy ware engine

Avast Intelligent scanner

Silent/Gaming Mode

Behavior Shield

Real Time Anti Root Kit Protection

Smart Virus Updates

Avast Community IQ

Behavioral Honey Pots

Green Computing

Avast I-Track

File System/Mail Shield

IM/P2P Shield

Network Shield

Lifehacker also brought out that this latest version brings a new Behavior Shield, heuristics engine and code emulator.

Many of you who are familiar with Avast will be pleased to hear about some major improvements. You will notice that the Interface has greatly improved in terms of it’s ease of use. The new interface is much more simple to use, and is that bit easier on the eye.

Also you will notice that scans run faster than the previous versions, which in turn makes it more efficient.

On one final note, you will notice as i mentioned above, that it has a Silent/Gaming mode. So, no more distracting pop ups and voices that close your game down involuntary.

I would seriously recommend this latest anti virus, whether you use an older version of avast, or perhaps you’ve never before used Avast, or perhaps you have used Avast, and have then changed to a different anti virus software. Either way I am making a serious recommendation, at least just try it, if you don’t like it, then simply uninstall it. Although you will need to give serious consideration before doing this if you are using a paid for anti virus as you may lose your license. (READ – Backup your licence)

To Download Avast 5.0 just click here.

I would very much appreciate your comments below, it really does help to get other peoples opinions. You could mention what you like about it, what you don’t like. Or even you could note your preference of anti virus and why. You see when other readers voice their opinions it gets other readers thinking about programs that they don’t use, so they will try them out. Its only by sharing our opinions that information gets around, and in turn benefits us all.

At some stage later tonight, they will allow free downloads to the Beta version of Office 2010. (A Beta version is NOT the final version – it may have bugs.) This version will bring with it lots of new features that have been sorely missing from all the older versions of Office. Here is some of the new features to look forward to:

Save Office Documents to the Cloud – Integrated with your Windows SkyDrive Account and Automatic Synchronization

Embed Web Videos in your Presentations – Like you see when websites embed a Youtube video in the middle of text

Quick Steps in Outlook - For instance, here’s a quick step for “Send and Delete” which would delete the email from your inbox after you’ve replied.

Built-in PDF Writer - Sorely needed.. Adobe won’t be happy.

Document printing made simple! - Gives you better visibility on the final print – before you press print.

Broadcast Slideshows within PowerPoint – No longer need a separate app to accomplish something that should have been there in 2007

Video Editing meets PowerPoint – More Powerpoint tools for better presentation.

Distribute your slides as video - Again- speaks for itself.

Built-in Screen Capture – Why so long? Great to see it there.

Outlook gets social – Any Xobni users will get this immediately – Full visibility on all contact with any one person or group.

Here are some screenshsots in the same order of each point above:

Girouard, one of the company’s four presidents including founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, said in an interview with ZDNet Asia that he expects Google’s online document application, Google Docs, to reach a “point of capability” next year that will serve the “vast majority’s needs”.

He acknowledged that Docs is currently “much less mature” than Google Mail or Calendar. “We know it. We wouldn’t ask people to get rid of Microsoft Office and use Google Docs because it is not mature yet,” he said.

But, this is expected to change in a year, when the company’s introduces some “thirty to fifty” updates to Docs to beef up the SaaS (software-as-a-service) office suite. These will include updates to features and performance, Girouard said.

“That having been said, I don’t think Office will entirely disappear,” he added. Instead, Microsoft’s offering will become a specialized offering for office workers who need its additional functions, akin to Adobe Photoshop, which is targeted at skilled workers, said Girouard.

Microsoft Office is “an overkill tool for most people”, he noted.

Microsoft recently released Exchange 2010, the first product to be updated within its Office suite, and announced price cuts to its SaaS Office offerings.

Girouard admitted Google Docs is “not perfect” at retaining the intricacies of other document formats imported into the platform, but he said it “will get there”.

Eventually, he added, market demand will push vendors away from proprietary formats entirely, making this barrier less of a likelihood in future.

Go paperless at home, in the office or your grannys house. I have been using this software for nearly two years. Simply put – A bill, invoice or receipt comes in. I pop it in the scanner, hit scan.. wait… Digital Archound pops up and grabs the scanned file. Asks for a title, category and details if I want. Then it whisks it away safely to my server and archives it. When I need to look up the document, I quickly hit Search By Keyword and there it is… INSTANTLY.

Review: Digital Archound
Needed: Scanner, Digital Archound, Windows Home Server or Regular Windows XP, Vista and 7
Level: Beginner
Cost: $49.95 – Desktop Version. $79.95 – Windows Home Server version

Installation

To install it, its pretty straight forward.

For Windows Home Server Installs:

Click the above links, and download a trial version. For Windows Home Server – go through the normal routine, of dropping the .MSI in your \\server\software\addins folder. Once you’ve done this, you head to the console and settings – add ins – and available – finally click install. You need to then navigate to your shared folders and you’ll see a new folder in there called Digital Archound. In there you’kk find the client connector software. Run this on all clients who will use the software.

For Windows XP/Vista/7 Installs:

Download trial from their site, and run it as a normal install. Click next all the way to the end.

My Experience

Desktop Console View

This is really a simple piece of software, which I enjoy using. I am using the Windows Home Server version. But you get almost the same functionality with the desktop version.

What happens is I get some business mail in the post. For example, a bank statement. I open it up, place it on the scanner and then scan it to my PC. (I am fortunate enough to have a network scanner and can choose who’s PC/Laptop to scan to. But this isn’t necessary. I am just boasting.)

Once the document is scanned in, Digital Archound pops up like this screenshot on the left. It asks for a few details. So I type in AIB Bank Statement. Choose Bank Statements from the categories drop down box. Enter the statement date and click Save. Thats it!.

The more detail you enter before hitting save, the better the search function becomes. The more tags you add, the easier it is to find exactly what you are looking for in one search.

Search View

After that you have a Manage Archives function. This simply lets you browse all your scans by category.

WHS Console View

Great Features

You can completely control the categories. Which is great because here in Ireland, we dont use certain preset categories. These are changed with a right-click.

Allows you to perform backups of the archives in case you ever lost anything or damaged your pc.

Once your archives are filed – they become centrally available to anyone you allow

Allows you rotate or crop and split PDFs before filing them.

Support

Great!! I have had the oppurtunity to test their support on many occasions. And everytime, it has been a great experience. I had a very techinical query recently. I broke it!!! I was reconfiguring my WHS to allow my blog to run alongside the normal Server website. But this broke Digital Archounds webservice which rendered DA dead. I emailed them, knowing I broke and expected them to say “sorry”… You know the usual…” its not our fault”… “we dont support you having fun with your own equipment”… FAR FROM IT. They not only explained what needed to be done, they remotely log in and showed me what to do. (Simply put, when you use host headers to allow more than one site to exist in IIS, you need to recreate the locahost for the default website.)

What I’d Like To Change

Licencing setup. I find the licencing method a pain. WHS users tend to break their servers a lot because of tinkering. This requires re-installs a lot. Dont get me wrong, if you use WHS the way it was intended, it never breaks. Anyway, this isn’t Digital Archounds fault, but you have to reinstalled and re-licence the software. It requires an email to be sent each time to reset the code. Not a big deal I know, but I prefer knowing I can reinstall anytime I want. Anyway, word from them recently suggested they were moving away from this method.

Price. I personally feel $79.95 for the WHS is a little steep. I think I would see people being put off a little on this one. Especially since the desktop version offers very similar features and is $30 less. However, I have still been extremely satisfied with the software. And sometimes, these days, thats rare.

Website. It really needs an overhaul. Yes it works. But as a web designer, I may be picky… I like to see it really show off the product.

Summary

Its really a fantastic product. Very dependable and reliable. Great support and helpful staff.
