Support Sunday: Use A Home Printer To Make Posters From Photos

If you need to print a poster size image for a party or event but don’t want the hassle of going to the printers or the cost, then here is a nifty idea. I stumbled onto some software called Easy Poster Printer. I will guide you through using here.

Simply, it allows you to take an image and divide it up in to equal blocks. Then when you print it on you home printer, you get each block printed out separately. Once you have it all printed, then just piece it together again. The process is called rasterbation.

With Easy Poster Printer you can…

Make posters of any size (max 20×20 meters) using a regular printer (A4 for example).
Save your poster and share it with others.
Print or Preview any page at any time.
Load, Clear, Rotate or Flip the poster image on the fly.
Define your poster size in Millimeters, Centimeters, Inch or even pages.
Adjust the poster size using build-in snap algorithms for up or down size.

How To Use It

Everything works from this simple sidebar on the left. You choose the Poster Image… button and this brings up your file browser. Choose an image to play with.

You probably need to click the stretch image check box. I did in all my trials but it depends on your image obviously.

Under dimensions, you can decide exactly how the image is cut up. I flicked to the unit: pages and tried out 3×3. So my image will print on 9 A4 sheets of paper.

The next two options are straight forward and personal choices.

Then quality is do with the final print quality. Normally I guess, 300 dpi is enough. Its default it 150 dpi.

Then print your poster.

That’s pretty much it. Except you may have notice that when you select your image and it loads into the software, the quality looks poor. This isn’t the final print quality, but rather it’s the screen quality. I actually don’t understand why its defaulted to low rendering but I assume it’s to do with the possibility of some users not having a decent graphics card. Anyway, to fix this, just go to Options > Screen Render Quality and choose high.

Head over to GD Software and download a copy of Easy Poster Printer which is freeware.

FlickFace.. No.. FaceFlick.. Ah, hmmm, Flickr On Facebook

A regular TNL reader alerted me today to a new Facebook app that pulls your Flickr photos into your Facebook profile. Its a simple interface and setup.

It allows you to keep your Facebook contacts up to date on your Flickr photos without them having to leave the site and go to another one. Its called Flickapp but I think faceflick or flickface is cooler.. .. or maybe FaceR

To get set up head over to this link – http://www.facebook.com/flickrtab

Run through the authorization procedure and follow the usual prompts. This is the important part. You need to go to your profile page on your Facebook account and click the + at the end of you apps list. Click on Flickr App and add it. From there you will have your photostream pulled into your Facebook pages. There are some settings in the app like Publish which pushes the photos to your front page.

Google Docs Not Ready Till Next Year – Googles Honesty

In a year, most enterprises will have the choice to “get rid of [Microsoft] Office if they chose to”, suggests Dave Girouard, president of Google’s enterprise division. Girouard, one of the company’s four presidents including founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, said in an interview with ZDNet Asia that he expects Google’s online document application, Google Docs, to reach a “point of capability” next year that will serve the “vast majority’s needs”. He acknowledged that Docs is currently “much less mature” than Google Mail or Calendar. “We know it. We wouldn’t ask people to get rid of Microsoft Office and use Google Docs because it is not mature yet,” he said. But, this is expected to change in a year, when the company’s introduces some “thirty to fifty” updates to Docs to beef up the SaaS (software-as-a-service) office suite. These will include updates to features and performance, Girouard said. “That having been said, I don’t think Office will entirely disappear,” he added. Instead, Microsoft’s offering will become a specialized offering for office workers who need its additional functions, akin to Adobe Photoshop, which is targeted at skilled workers, said Girouard. Microsoft Office is “an overkill tool for most people”, he noted. Microsoft recently released Exchange 2010, the first product to be updated within its Office suite, and announced price cuts to its SaaS Office offerings. Girouard admitted Google Docs is “not perfect” at retaining the intricacies of other document formats imported into the platform, but he said it “will get there”. Eventually, he added, market demand will push vendors away from proprietary formats entirely, making this barrier less of a likelihood in future. This story was first written over at ZDNet.
