It’s a sad sad fact, that there are still many places that do not have a decent broadband connection. Of course, places like Finland, with their 1MB line minimum law, this doesn’t apply to. But for the rest of us – it’s fact!

Many times, when on the road fixing peoples computers, invariably, I have to update a fresh install of Anti-virus software. As you know , this takes forever the first time. To get around this I had been downloading Microsoft’s Security Essentials offline update file. Of course, you have to grab a latest copy before you head, it still saves a lot of time.

Well, it would be great to be able to do this for all the software I install. And now you can.

WSUS Offline

WSUS means Windows Software Update Service. Its an app/software server that allows admins to download one copy of the latest Windows updates, approve it and send it to clients.

WSUS offline.. does this in a similar way but offline of course!!! It’s now at version 6.3 and its a small enough download. Open the ZIP file and extract the contents to a folder on your desktop. Double click your Application file and this is what you get:

Click for larger image

google_ad_client = "pub-8350415631214616";
google_ad_slot = "2064052456";
google_ad_width = 468;
google_ad_height = 60;
//-->

You have many options from here. You can download the files to ISO’s ready for DVD burning or to your USB key.

When you are then on-site, you can load up your offline files and you will something like this:

Head over and grab it so you can continue your conquest for the family hero title!!

It’s a site for students …. AND…. families of students!! The idea is to help students through college and to be able to afford all of the software they need for the courses. They are called software4students.ie from Dreamspeak Ireland.

You can get anything and everything on there. Is there a catch? No. But there are some very reasonable rules which we will come to in a minute.

First of all, here is a snapshot of what’s on there and available:

They cover all the main Microsoft Products and Operating Systems, Adobes range and some Kaspersky Security amongst other titles.

You can get MS Windows 7 Ultimate for only €117.. saving over €455. Or Office Professional for €83!!!

So the rules

On one final note, you will notice as i mentioned above, that it has a Silent/Gaming mode. So, no more distracting pop ups and voices that close your game down involuntary.

I would seriously recommend this latest anti virus, whether you use an older version of avast, or perhaps you’ve never before used Avast, or perhaps you have used Avast, and have then changed to a different anti virus software. Either way I am making a serious recommendation, at least just try it, if you don’t like it, then simply uninstall it. Although you will need to give serious consideration before doing this if you are using a paid for anti virus as you may lose your license. (READ – Backup your licence)

To Download Avast 5.0 just click here.

I would very much appreciate your comments below, it really does help to get other peoples opinions. You could mention what you like about it, what you don’t like. Or even you could note your preference of anti virus and why. You see when other readers voice their opinions it gets other readers thinking about programs that they don’t use, so they will try them out. Its only by sharing our opinions that information gets around, and in turn benefits us all.

So here we are going to delve into it in a little detail to get you your way. Hopefully , you will be able to get faster and more reliable results with this information. Bear in mind, it is not supposed to be an exhaustive walk-through, but rather to suit novices.

Torrents? uTorrent?

Without being overly technical, I want to explain this in simple terms, explaining just enough for you to get going. A torrent is a really small file that contains the link back information to the original file/program/movie/show/album that you are looking to download. The torrent file is conveniently label abc123.torrent. The file contains the name and sizes and more importantly the location of the files out on the internets. FYI- downloading torrents is NOT illegal. Downloaded pirated software etc., is.
A magnet link – is and I quote Wikipedia:

Such a link typically identifies a file not by location or name, but by content; more precisely, by the content’s hash value.

Since it refers to a file based on content or metadata, rather than by location, a magnet link can be considered a kind of Uniform Resource Name, rather than the more common Uniform Resource Locators. Although it could be used for other applications, it is particularly useful in a peer-to-peer context, because it allows resources to be referenced without the need for a continuously available host.

As far as you and I are concern, its a faster, more direct way to download with peer to peer.

So first of all, download uTorrent here. Run through the setup installation accepting the defaults, except that last option. This offers you the Ask toolbar. Make your own decision here bearing in mind that accepting it supports the free uTorrent. If you don’t like, uninstall it after.

Now we’ll get started

Start up uTorrent by clicking on its icon or find it in the start menu.

When it opens a one time only pop up appears called a speed guide. It is designed to help you choose your speed settings that will optimize the running of uTorrent. In the first dropdown box, you have a list of speeds that say xx/256, xx/512 etc.

You want to choose the one that suits your UPLOAD speed. I have a 7 meg line at home and an upload of 512. So I chose xx/512. You can choose accordingly.

Next is the port number. This is very important to get decent speeds. As you can see in the screen shot, it automatically chose 34999 for me. This is fine, however, I need to go to my router and create a port forward to my desktop/PC IP address for that particular port. Next Sunday, I will write about how to configure your router for port forwarding. When that’s done, I will update this post on getting a green icon in uTorrent. In the meantime, ask in the comments below and I will answer you.

Click use selected settings.

Now go to Options > Preferences.

Rather than me writing this out word for word, just follow the screen shots from here and copy each screen and make it identical to your setup. I will circle my changes:

Click the Associate Button and Start with Windows

Now head to UI Settings:

You can see my Upload is a max 10. This means it will upload slower, but won't choke your network so much. My download is 350 which allows me to still browse the net comfortably whilst downloading. This is on a 7 meg line. You need to reduce these according to your connection. If I had a 1 meg line, I would reduce my download speed to 50.

The rest of the settings are up to you. The queuing area is how many concurrent downloads will happen at once. If you leave that low, you generally have a better experience.

Hope you have fun with this and follow on to this post tomorrow on how to download a torrent and use it -

At some stage later tonight, they will allow free downloads to the Beta version of Office 2010. (A Beta version is NOT the final version – it may have bugs.) This version will bring with it lots of new features that have been sorely missing from all the older versions of Office. Here is some of the new features to look forward to:

Save Office Documents to the Cloud – Integrated with your Windows SkyDrive Account and Automatic Synchronization

Embed Web Videos in your Presentations – Like you see when websites embed a Youtube video in the middle of text

Quick Steps in Outlook - For instance, here’s a quick step for “Send and Delete” which would delete the email from your inbox after you’ve replied.

Built-in PDF Writer - Sorely needed.. Adobe won’t be happy.

Document printing made simple! - Gives you better visibility on the final print – before you press print.

Broadcast Slideshows within PowerPoint – No longer need a separate app to accomplish something that should have been there in 2007

Video Editing meets PowerPoint – More Powerpoint tools for better presentation.

Distribute your slides as video - Again- speaks for itself.

Built-in Screen Capture – Why so long? Great to see it there.

Outlook gets social – Any Xobni users will get this immediately – Full visibility on all contact with any one person or group.

Here are some screenshsots in the same order of each point above:

If your like me you have one or more of these and have never ever video chatted with any one nor recorded a video. However there are plenty of uses for them if your creative. (No!.. not those kind).

You can use it for security. Lets face it, your PC is probably on all day. Its a great opportunity to keep an eye on things. The problem is that most software out there is clunky and well, rubbish. And even if it does work, the annoying thing is searching through hours of videos to fine 30 seconds of necessary video.

Well all that has changed with some software called Vitamin D. Simple to use! Free! And very good!

It’s not motion detection, it’s people detection

Motion detection can be triggered by swaying branches, pets, or even light changes from clouds. Professional-grade security systems track objects but cost thousands of dollars and require expert calibration and tuning. Vitamin D Video uses a revolutionary form of intelligent computing, based on how the brain works, that can outperform state-of-the-art systems in many real world cases.

This video explains it better:

Feature List:

If you are interested in general home security and/or monitoring but don’t know where to start, a few examples of what you can do are:

Record who comes to your door while you are away

Help your neighborhood watch group by monitoring the street or your backyard while you are out.

Send yourself a notification when your child comes home from school.

Set up a schedule to record inside your house while you are at work or on vacation.

Monitor activity at a second home when you are absent.

Catch if there are kids in your pool, or find out who (or what) is knocking over your trash cans.

Watch the backyard or a room where your pet is supposed to be (or not supposed to be!).

For small businesses or retail locations, a few examples of what you can do beyond having an archive of video are:

Monitor a back door or unattended lobby area.

See who goes in and out of a specific room or secure area.

Figure out who is littering in front of your store, writing graffiti on your walls, loitering suspiciously after hours, etc.

Help verify if an alarm is false, before the police arrive (and potentially fine you).

Set up some very basic flow analysis (“retail analytics”) for your store, e.g., quickly scan to see how many people lingered in front of an end cap or entered a section of your store.

Girouard, one of the company’s four presidents including founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, said in an interview with ZDNet Asia that he expects Google’s online document application, Google Docs, to reach a “point of capability” next year that will serve the “vast majority’s needs”.

He acknowledged that Docs is currently “much less mature” than Google Mail or Calendar. “We know it. We wouldn’t ask people to get rid of Microsoft Office and use Google Docs because it is not mature yet,” he said.

But, this is expected to change in a year, when the company’s introduces some “thirty to fifty” updates to Docs to beef up the SaaS (software-as-a-service) office suite. These will include updates to features and performance, Girouard said.

“That having been said, I don’t think Office will entirely disappear,” he added. Instead, Microsoft’s offering will become a specialized offering for office workers who need its additional functions, akin to Adobe Photoshop, which is targeted at skilled workers, said Girouard.

Microsoft Office is “an overkill tool for most people”, he noted.

Microsoft recently released Exchange 2010, the first product to be updated within its Office suite, and announced price cuts to its SaaS Office offerings.

Girouard admitted Google Docs is “not perfect” at retaining the intricacies of other document formats imported into the platform, but he said it “will get there”.

Eventually, he added, market demand will push vendors away from proprietary formats entirely, making this barrier less of a likelihood in future.

Its not your fault! You’ve grown up on Windows. Its your parents fault! They didn’t teach you the rights and wrongs in the OS world….

OK Maybe that’s silly. However, we have mostly been conditioned in to using Windows for everything and we get a little stuck there.

You know, M$ Windows had the whole touch screen phone thing down a long time before iPhones and Androids.. The latter came along a shook M$ up and said – no, we want more and better.

Well the same thing is/has happened with PC Operating Systems. The Linux distribution has been around a very long time. They feel like Apple and Google – We need options and choice!

Ubuntu

There are many Linux flavours to choose from, but I am only looking at Ubuntu for this post. Also because I am currently writing up an how to article on installing Ubuntu 9.10 on your PC alongside windows.

Here is a screenshot run down of the features you can expect on Ubuntu 9.10. I think you’ll agree that it looks fancy. In fact, does it surprise you how good it looks?

Software Center

Instant access to thousands of free and open-source applications.

Categories include Education, Games, Sound and Video, Graphics, Programming and Office.

Simply select the applications you want to use and the Ubuntu Software Center will add them to your computer.

No CDs, no licenses, no hassle.

Email and chat

Chat with friends and colleagues through Empathy which integrates Yahoo, Gmail, MSN, Jabber, AOL, QQ and many more.

Evolution gives you email, an address book and a calendar and works well with colleagues and friends using MS Outlook.

Browse the Internet

Ubuntu includes Mozilla Firefox 3.5 for faster and safer browsing.

For a choice of other open-source web browsers visit the Ubuntu Software Center and take your pick.

Photos

Upload from your camera or phone to F-Spot.

Manage, tag, share and sort your photos.

Upload easily to your favourite social network or photo-sharing sites including Flickr, Facebook, Picasa and many others.

Music and videos

Plug in your PSP, iPod, MP3 player and use Rhythmbox to download, store, buy and play music.

Share playlists with your friends.

Access Last.fm directly through Rhythmbox to stream your favourite music.

Stream and play video from YouTube, BBC and others.

Office applications

Create professional documents, spreadsheets and presentations with OpenOffice.org 3.1.

OpenOffice.org is compatible with all office applications including Microsoft Office.

The big difference is that OpenOffice.org is free (and promises never to introduce Mr Clippy).

Play games

Over 400 completely free and completely cool games. Solitaire is not the only game in town.

Visit the Ubuntu Software Center to easily browse, select and install games.

Store, sync and share

Integrated “Ubuntu One” technology gives you 2 GB of online storage for free.

Easily share files between your own and your friends’ computers.

Upgrade at low cost for more storage if you need it.

Accessibility

At the core of the Ubuntu philosophy is the belief that computing is for everyone, whatever your circumstances. Ubuntu is one of the most accessible operating systems around and is fully translated into 23 languages with many more to follow.

The IT guy who was there before me never wrote down the passwords and he has since left. The owner has no idea what the password is. Worse still, they may have fallen out over something, and the IT guy purposefully made it impossible to guess. Well, I have the tools to fix this and can do it relatively quick. But my tools are expensive. Here is one that is not expensive… it’s free!

Again from the great site GiveawayOfTheDay, I bring you an offering from Lazesoft called Recover My Password. Which simply does what it says. Its a piece of software that you load on to a disc and you put it in your PC when it’s starting up. Then it will boot into a special and simple recovery mode. I will point out, that this is not the same as downloading and installing a piece of software. You must read the instructions on this one, although it’s not difficult.

This is really something you download now, follow the instructions, get your disc ready and put it away for a rainy day. And when that day comes, believe me, its worse than all the rainy days in Ireland.

Features:

100% recovery rate.

Lazesoft Recover My Password let you recover your administrator’s password with a few clicks.

Lazesoft Recover My Password is easy to install and use with a very handy and clear user interface.

Automatically detects several operating systems installed on the computer.

Unlocks user accounts.

Enables user accounts.

Disables the password expiry option.

Here’s a few screen shots to whet your appetite.

The time now is 14.00 GMT. If you find photoshop too heavy for simple tasks or too complicated to understand, the Inpaint is for you. It simply allows you to edit photos without having to learn difficult tools. Its so simple and very easy to follow. Its only free for today. Normally its $39.99. Have a look and see what you think. Give it a try and you’ll see what a whiz you can become.

I have cut this part from the makers site. Its how they describe its simplicity and features.

Inpaint reconstructs the selected image area from the pixel near the area boundary. Inpaint may be used to remove undesirable objects from still images.

Delete any unwanted object from your photo, such as extra power-line, people, text… The program will automatically inpaint the selected area to erase it.

If some unexpected object spoils an otherwise good photograph, Inpaint may be used to remove it. Simply select the object. No need for fiddly messing about with the clone tool!

After eating, PC is on and you begin the usual ritual. Open all your favourite websites at once. Click each tab and log in with a user-name and password, that you now wish you made the same for every website. Or if your a little more tech savvy, you use bookmarks and a password logger to slightly automate the arduous task.

Well, I have always felt, this process needs some ingenuity. Some strong imagination. Some one who understands how annoying this is. And those people happen to be called ZooLoo. I wanted to be the first to tell you all about it. I believe they have cracked it and it will be as big as Facebook and Twitter. You heard it here first!!

I cant begin to explain how deep ZooLoo goes, how much is available to you and yet how simple their approach to all this has been.

Simply put, it gives you a website. Your own personal website. For example – konradwalsh.zooloo.com. You set this site as your main homepage in your Internet browser, if you want to. That way, when you open your browser you are suddenly logged into everything you want. In this post, I am really going to just skim over the top of it.

This is what my page is looking like after 15 mins of playing.

I need to spend time tidying it up and playing with a bit more, but it gives you a good idea of whats happening here. When you sign up and create your page, you are presented with this screen to quickly get you started:

They have included so much that it will take you a while to get thru it all. But best of all, the way they designed, none of it is in your face, unless you want it there. They have also included an online organizer, including calendar, contacts, to-do and invitation lists.:

And the last thing I looked over was the extremely extensive list of entertainment options built right in to it. There’s Hulu, Youtube, CNN, FoxNews, Games…. Here is a screenie:

They are running competitions too for the month of November. And the prize is money!!!

Some other features I wont go in to:

Your own blog.

Your own domain.

Your own website.

Built in email system.

Friend invitation system

Photo and Video Display and Sharing.

A Shopping Center – Yes, really!!

Google Search Bar.

And a massive, I mean MASSIVE amount of widgets.

This is just one screen shot of just tools widgets.

You need to check this out yourself… Oh, and by the way, its free!!!!!!!!!!!

Zooloo

[UPDATE] See comments below.. Aaron was kind enough to stop by and mention that an iPhone version is on its way.. which is really sweet… that kind of control out and about instead of each opening separately.

Last week I discussed how to use Media Companion to organize your TV Shows and Movies. The software works extremely well and is constantly being developed, with new features being added over time. The movies side of the program is very complete. However, Billy, the creator/developer is now really focusing on the TV Shows thread of the software. If you’ve not read my post on this software, it is a good place to start and get familiar with how you should organize your folder structure and file placement.

However, there are some features missing or “not yet developed” is a better way to describe it.

It doesn’t tell you which shows are missing.

It doesn’t tell you which shows names are incorrect – E.g Instead of 24 Season 7 Episode 17 … it should be…. 24 – S07E17 – Episode Name

It doesn’t look for the missing show online and automatically download it once available

It doesn’t maintain your folder structure – which is essential for media centers to catch everything

This is where TV Rename steps in. Actually, TV Rename is what I start up first. Run my scans and organize the folders and files. Then Media Companion goes a scrapes the detailed information. Truthfully, TV Rename actually scrapes this info too and makes it available in media center compatible format. But TV Rename falls down here in terms of quality. Therefore, this is why I use two programs to accomplish one task. When you become familiar with both programs you’ll understand better.

The first thing you need to do is head to the setup section. You need to go to folder monitor and tell it where your TV Shows are kept. This can be on a local drive or a network share. It will scan the folder names and look up the name on theTVDB.com and return the result for you to review and accept. 90% of the time it gets this right, but just double check. For example, Brothers & Sisters is different to Brothers and Sisters, but only because there actually to different shows by that name. One from 1970 and the current one.

I recommend you create one TV Show folder and one show inside that and then add that to TV Rename. This will give you a chance to experience everything without mucking up your work already.

There are three tabs -My Shows, Scan and When To Watch

My Shows

Here you get a list of all the shows you want to watch and keep track of whats missing. Its fairly straight forward. Shows are in alphabetical order down the left. Expand each show to get the folder structure and on the right the information changes accordingly.

There are settings at the bottom of this page that allow fine tuning of the show details. Maybe someday I’ll write a post on this, but for now its a bit too technical.

Scan

This tab scans your list of shows and looks for what is missing. It then looks at whats available on the net and will start a download in uTorrent if you have it installed. Scan also then tells you which shows need renaming. And finally will ask you if you want to move any shows to their correct folders. Again this is fairly straight forward. Just hit scan and when its done hit do checked.

Here is a shot of a scan in progress:

TIP: Always scan once more after to perform the do checked function. It will check other things like the name after a file is downloaded.

TIP #2: Double click any missing show and your browser will open up with what ever torrent site you selected and automatically search for that show. I recommend BTJunkie for high success rate.

When To Watch

This lists what shows happened in the last seven days. Then what is on for the coming seven days. And finally, what shows you can look forward to in the future. Again, Tip #2 works here also.

And that is pretty it… There are lots of options to play with and if you need further help, just say so in the comments and I’ll walk you through it.

There are forums availble over at TVRename.com to ask questions and a out dated guide is available also.

FINAL TIP: Make sure you always either hit File > Save or when exiting always say Yes to save.

Click On The Ads!

<!--

We rented an apartment that had one wired connection available to us. Both of us had laptops. So when one was finished emailing and uploading pictures, the other would start. CRAZY!!! In this day and age. What we really needed was the ability to have on laptop share its connection to the others. And also to our mobile phones.

This is where Connectify steps in. When Microsoft announced Windows 7, about a year ago, they said it would have Internet Sharing over WIFI natively built in. Well they did most of the work and then decided it wasn’t ready for release. Connectify bridges this gap and takes advantage of it. Connectify allows you to take your current Internet connection from a cable and share it over your WIFI card to anyone you want, whether its to their phone, laptop, Blackberry or iPhone.

At the minute, its free because its in beta trials. This is a good opportunity to see if it works for you. It is something I would use when providing PC support or setting up networks. I can quickly create a new network connection and do whatever I need to on it.

After a quick download, you run the installation file… (Click on the Connectify logo above for download page..)

Then you name your Connection and choose a password. Make sure its a password that you don’t mind sharing with friends. In the drop-down box click on your Wireless adapter connection. And that’s it. On your devices, you search for WIFI hot-spots as normal and use the password to log in.

Go paperless at home, in the office or your grannys house. I have been using this software for nearly two years. Simply put – A bill, invoice or receipt comes in. I pop it in the scanner, hit scan.. wait… Digital Archound pops up and grabs the scanned file. Asks for a title, category and details if I want. Then it whisks it away safely to my server and archives it. When I need to look up the document, I quickly hit Search By Keyword and there it is… INSTANTLY.

Review: Digital Archound
Needed: Scanner, Digital Archound, Windows Home Server or Regular Windows XP, Vista and 7
Level: Beginner
Cost: $49.95 – Desktop Version. $79.95 – Windows Home Server version

Installation

To install it, its pretty straight forward.

For Windows Home Server Installs:

Click the above links, and download a trial version. For Windows Home Server – go through the normal routine, of dropping the .MSI in your \\server\software\addins folder. Once you’ve done this, you head to the console and settings – add ins – and available – finally click install. You need to then navigate to your shared folders and you’ll see a new folder in there called Digital Archound. In there you’kk find the client connector software. Run this on all clients who will use the software.

For Windows XP/Vista/7 Installs:

Download trial from their site, and run it as a normal install. Click next all the way to the end.

My Experience

Desktop Console View

This is really a simple piece of software, which I enjoy using. I am using the Windows Home Server version. But you get almost the same functionality with the desktop version.

What happens is I get some business mail in the post. For example, a bank statement. I open it up, place it on the scanner and then scan it to my PC. (I am fortunate enough to have a network scanner and can choose who’s PC/Laptop to scan to. But this isn’t necessary. I am just boasting.)

Once the document is scanned in, Digital Archound pops up like this screenshot on the left. It asks for a few details. So I type in AIB Bank Statement. Choose Bank Statements from the categories drop down box. Enter the statement date and click Save. Thats it!.

The more detail you enter before hitting save, the better the search function becomes. The more tags you add, the easier it is to find exactly what you are looking for in one search.

Search View

After that you have a Manage Archives function. This simply lets you browse all your scans by category.

WHS Console View

Great Features

You can completely control the categories. Which is great because here in Ireland, we dont use certain preset categories. These are changed with a right-click.

Allows you to perform backups of the archives in case you ever lost anything or damaged your pc.

Once your archives are filed – they become centrally available to anyone you allow

Allows you rotate or crop and split PDFs before filing them.

Support

Great!! I have had the oppurtunity to test their support on many occasions. And everytime, it has been a great experience. I had a very techinical query recently. I broke it!!! I was reconfiguring my WHS to allow my blog to run alongside the normal Server website. But this broke Digital Archounds webservice which rendered DA dead. I emailed them, knowing I broke and expected them to say “sorry”… You know the usual…” its not our fault”… “we dont support you having fun with your own equipment”… FAR FROM IT. They not only explained what needed to be done, they remotely log in and showed me what to do. (Simply put, when you use host headers to allow more than one site to exist in IIS, you need to recreate the locahost for the default website.)

What I’d Like To Change

Licencing setup. I find the licencing method a pain. WHS users tend to break their servers a lot because of tinkering. This requires re-installs a lot. Dont get me wrong, if you use WHS the way it was intended, it never breaks. Anyway, this isn’t Digital Archounds fault, but you have to reinstalled and re-licence the software. It requires an email to be sent each time to reset the code. Not a big deal I know, but I prefer knowing I can reinstall anytime I want. Anyway, word from them recently suggested they were moving away from this method.

Price. I personally feel $79.95 for the WHS is a little steep. I think I would see people being put off a little on this one. Especially since the desktop version offers very similar features and is $30 less. However, I have still been extremely satisfied with the software. And sometimes, these days, thats rare.

Website. It really needs an overhaul. Yes it works. But as a web designer, I may be picky… I like to see it really show off the product.

Summary

Its really a fantastic product. Very dependable and reliable. Great support and helpful staff.
